Artist's Statement:

My love of working with clay started at an early age when I first came into contact with it at primary school.  This interest was rekindled at a later date through my study and work with ceramics at the Elm Wood pottery Centre in London.  I learnt a wide range of techniques and experimented with them as my ideas and artistic directions developed. Following time spent in Brazil, further inspiration resulted from contact with the different peoples, cultures and wildlife plus an exploration into the ceramic traditions of the country.  Upon returning to Britain I began to incorporate these experiences into my work and concentrated on making masks and figurative sculpture.

My interest in wildlife and the amazing variety of creatures I encountered in the Amazon and Pantanal regions of Brazil resulted in a range of animal sculptures.  Each one is individually hand-made in grogged stoneware clay and finished in a high firing matt glaze chosen for its natural colours and texture. I soon looked to other countries and their wildlife to extend the range and diversity of animal subjects. I also started using different techniques and finishes, e.g. using brightly coloured gloss, lustre and metallic glazes and including the use of metal in the production of beetles and bugs. More recently, I have used influences of local and natural history in making more abstract work, producing pots and tilework (panels, sets and individual tiles)
