Artist's Statement:
In the 1970s I graduated with a BSc (Hons) Computer Science. I have spent many years working in IT and bringing up a family. During this time, I never seemed to find time for my hobby, sewing. In 2003 I decided to take the City & Guilds Creative Studies & Embroidery Course and completed both parts 1 & 2.
I am really attracted to pattern in whatever I am researching. This may be my mathematical training rather than having an artistic background. I am fascinated by the pattern found in natural objects of stone and architecture, wood and interior design, plant life and nature with of course everyday objects. I have always been very keen to work with bright colour and I like experimenting with and manipulating fabric. Observing pattern stimulates me to creatively design contemporary textile pieces and then I really enjoy constructing, stitching or embroidering, by machine or hand, to create unique, original and exquisite professionally finished pieces of textile art.
I am currently striving to create exciting pieces that are all different yet have common themes linking them. The Stanage Edge Collection is a set of wall hangings, the first of which I exhibited with Sheffield Art Through Textiles at the prestigious 2007 Knitting & Stitching shows. This body of work involves using many techniques. These are the use of glass beads, transfer dyes on acrylic fabrics, acrylic paint, bonding, heating and fusing polyester/nylon fabrics that I really enjoy.
