Artist's Statement:
Inspired by texture, pushing materials to their limits and layering techniques- Priya’s paintings are striking and textural. Her eye for colour, texture and composition comes from her textiles background. Priya’s current experimentation and manipulation of materials has led to work becoming more abstract. Priya works spontaneously, and uses sketchbooks to explore her thoughts and ideas. In comparison her abstract paintings develop slowly; building up the surfaces slowly, then scraping into them exposing what is underneath. This method reflects her thoughts, beliefs, and emotions that cannot be expressed through mere representation.
Priya’s jewellery is inspired by nature, the elements and especially the patterns occurring in organic forms such as vines, moss and flowers. Constantly reinventing the ancient technique of wire-wrapping by incorporating textile construction methods of embroidery, knitting and weaving- Priya’s designs are elegant and have timeless appeal. Most pieces are made using sterling silver or copper for its therapeutic qualities. Semi-precious stones are used in conjunction with the wire and creating a harmony between the metal and gemstone is an integral part of the process. Jewellery is like creating a sculpture and most of Priya’s designs are one-of-a-kind giving the wearer a sense of exclusivity.
