Artist's Statement:

I make functional wooden tableware and sculptural green oak furniture.

My wooden vessels are all turned using medieval technology on a foot powered lathe, I have supplied numerous museums with replicas including Hampton Court Palace, the Tower of London and the Globe Theatre though I still enjoy best selling bowls and plates for people to use every day. Some people see eating from wooden plates as a bit quirky in this day and age but there is something beautiful about it, they are quiet, individual and being a natural insulator keep your food warm. After 10 years research in 2005 I published “The Wooden Bowl” the standard work on the history of wooden vessels.

My other interest is in making organically shaped oak furniture for private and corporate clients, particularly benches and picnic tables. In 2005 I won a CPRE design award for a green oak bridge. My work is particularly suited to natural settings where more typical “park benches” with their straight lines can look out of place. One customer commented that their garden bench looked as if it had grown there
