poet laureate of the peak - april 2006

Easter Sunday

on Easter Sunday,
the first day of spring,
sun was an egg of light

hawthorn buds tight, but
coltsfoot was out, larks crested,
sky streamered by vapour trails

hills green-backed, distant
reef upon reef,
topped by trees like coral -

a sheep stood watchfully,
full fleece matted, braided
and plaited by wind

over layered, cracked limestone
we followed the grass,
tracked by sheep and hikers

we were waiting, we knew,
for love's resurrection:
we'd no idea of the form it would take
